Preparing for College Dorm Life Couldn’t be Easier!

Personalized Laundry Bag

Unless your child is attending summer school, chances are the school year has ended by now.  For parents of younger children, this may be a time of summer vacations and lazy days spent relaxing by the pool; but for the parents of a college-bound senior the summer may seem a lot shorter and less relaxing.

Personalized Laundry Bags

Preparing for dorm life will be your son or daughter’s preoccupation this summer. They will want to start shopping early for household items like towels, washcloths, bedding, a laundry basket and storage containers.  But first, they may need to learn how to do their own laundry.  Remember, college life requires kids to transport their dirty clothes from the dorm to the college Laundromat, so a personalized laundry bag is a smart purchase to make.

Personalized Clothing Labels

In addition to a personalized laundry bag, why not invest in some personalized clothing labels? This will keep their clothes from getting mixed in with their roommates’, and it will ensure they hold onto their favorite sweaters, jackets and personal items.  Clothing name tape or clothing labels can be purchased in sew-on or adhesive styles, but most teens like the stick-on variety.

Cooking Supplies

Chances are, the dorm room won’t have a lot of room for food or cooking devices, and the refrigerator will be very small.  Keep this in mind when shopping for food.  Unless the dorm has as a small kitchenette, most students stick to a coffeemaker and a hot pot or small microwave.

Pack Light and Shop Locally

If there is anything you can avoid packing in the car, consider buying it on-site instead.  This way, your college-bound son or daughter can shop with their dorm roommate for shared necessities and they won’t bring duplicate items.  When it comes to packing for a college dorm room, remember “less is more.”

As the college dorm move-in date approaches, the pile of items to be packed will become quite large.  Between the clothing, accessories, books, computer, supplies, storage containers, bedding and dorm decorations, it is easy to get carried away.  There are only so many things that will fit into a college dorm room, so it will make sense to leave the non-essentials at home.  Just don’t forget the personalized laundry bag and clothing name tape labels!
